It seems Government can’t now run the basics!

From the weatherman to the taxman to the jobs man, are Government run public services falling apart?…

A pretty serious accusation I know but as well as the high profile policy failings in some areas of the current government’s work I genuinely believe that now the wheels are falling off the wagon on the basic service delivery stuff too.

Recently I’ve had disabled constituents in real difficulties because of failures by Government Departments to process information and, amazingly, under siege Civil Servants openly conceding to me it’s getting worse because of dodgy systems and bad procedures.

Personally, I’ve had the same conversation once a month for the last six months with the taxman over sending stuff to me which is completely irrelevant to my situation. The last time, which was yesterday, the lady apologised saying she had little faith in being able to stop it, and I quote, ‘because it’s falling apart rather at our end’… very honest but good grief, how many millions is that wasting across the country.

Then there’s the Job Centre Plus guy (quite a senior one actually) I met at a conference on the recession last week who eluded to the fact they were getting nowhere fast and the incessant and pointless initiatives coming from government each week served only to get in the way of the few bits that are working. 

And even the Met Office can’t decide if it’s BBQ or umbrella time this summer and then tries to ’spin’ their way out of it.

I could think of numerous other examples recently but it’s really quite depressing. So I won’t!
