Impressive youngsters ‘doing’ democracy
“I’m really passionate about the need for young people to understand and take a real part in decision making”
An excellent evening where dozens of young people came together with County Councillors to discuss how to broaden the interest and input into decision making in our county. It was the launch of Staffordshire’s Local Democracy Week.
I was wholeheartedly impressed with the debate on our table. A genuine enthusiasm to get involved although what came through to me was a lack of understanding on how decisions are made and delivered by Local Government.
That’s unfortunately something that didn’t surprise me because I think the same problem applies to much of the voting age population as well younger people. I’m looking forward to doing my bit at hosting debates in the County Chamber during LDW and also to finding new ways of engaging future electors in my own ‘patch’. Ideas welcome on how!
