Royal Mail just don’t get it

The union appear to be running the company into the ground but the inept management must be held responsible too…

Whilst the CWU plan more strikes and big business abandons, on a daily basis, any thought of continuing to use the Royal Mail, the future of the company looks more and more uncertain.

rmBut I’m finding it impossible to judge what’s really going on. Surely the union bosses involved can see the folly of their actions for their members’ long term future? And yet whenever I hear union big-wigs talking up their case I can’t help feeling they are more concerned about a ‘union win’ at any cost than the posties who are losing wages and probably their future.

Although, in my view, the senior management of the Royal Mail are also culpable. Part of the art of competent management is about workforce relations, something in which they are clearly failing. The biggest issue for me, however, is that I just don’t know who to believe.

Too many times I’ve heard management spinning and playing politics and too many times I’ve heard the union bosses lose their thread on what they think the real issue is. Only today it started out as protecting the quality of services and finished up two minutes later with a refusal to accept job losses through modernisation.

All this against a background of a ludicrous arrangement where the Royal Mail are required to make the local ‘to letterbox’ delivery, at an unsustainable cost, of other commercial postal operators.
