Memorial project for Wigginton

A very apt idea with our troops facing massive challenges in difficult times…

I wrote recently about an amazing soldier who was born in Wigginton nearly 200 years ago.

Private Samuel Parkes won the second Victoria Cross presented by Queen Victoria for his courageous efforts during the Charge of the Light Brigade in 1854.

A real focal point for village people

A real focal point for villagers in Wigginton

With some villagers from Wigginton believing it’s time that he was recognised in the community with some sort of memorial a meeting was called to talk about how. A tremendous idea and there were more than a dozen people who turned up to the meeting to discuss the way ahead this week.

This is something I’m very pleased to help with and I was even more deligjhted when one of the ideas that came forward was to combine a memorial for Private Parkes with a general war memorial to all of our troops who’ve been lost in conflicts.

And one of the locals there painted a beautiful picture of what the village green at Wigginton might look like with a stone memorial on it.

So, the project seems firmly underway and the group are now setting up a formal committee to take things forward… hopefully in time for next summer and, of course, next year’s Remembrance Day.
